EU-Project "Food on Film"

Together with three other European nature film festivals, the innsbruck nature film festival has been awarded the EU project “Food on Film.”

Since the fall semester of 2024, 19 Austrian school classes have been exploring urgent issues related to food, food production, and the environment. They created scripts that were later turned into one-minute short films.

The project provides teachers and schools with a modern, digital, and interactive educational film format, granting access to numerous international and national environmental films, documentaries, and scientific materials. All that is needed for production is a smartphone and creative ideas.

In each participating countries two classes with the best scripts won a professional film workshop to professionally finalize their short films.

We had a Ceremonial Closing of the First Round of Food on Film 1 and Outlook at the inff 2025.

Students, teachers, and many guests came together to celebrate the successful completion of the first round of Food on Film 1. The ten winning films from the five participating countries were shown on the big cinema screen – a very special moment for everyone involved.

The young filmmakers enthusiastically spoke about their journey from the first script ideas to the final cut. They described the creative challenges, teamwork, and dedication that went into producing their films – and how proud they felt seeing their work presented on a real cinema screen.

The event also featured inspiring presentations, including one about the rich diversity of traditional grain varieties in Tyrol and another about the wide-ranging activities of Slow Food. The afternoon ended with a relaxed get-together, where guests could continue conversations, exchange impressions, and learn more about grains in an engaging and hands-on way.

The winners have been chosen!

We were truly impressed by the students’ creative script ideas and the many wonderful stories they submitted. It was a real challenge for the jury to select just two winning classes!

And the winning classes are:

Class 7D from BRG in der Au (WEST), project supervisor: Andreas Schrott
Title: Your order, please! Don’t order, please!”
This story explores the environmental impact of ordering a burger.

Class 3AT from the Carinthian School of Tourism in Villach, project supervisor: Christopher Winkler
Title: “A second for us is a life for them!”
A boy goes through several unpleasant moments. He gets annoyed but quickly moves on. Animals, on the other hand, often spend their entire lives in such unpleasant situations — and know no other reality.

Congratulations to all! The film workshops took place at the end of May. It were two exciting days for everyone involved, and they all learned a lot about making films.

The filmed scripts of all remaining classes will also be shown at the festival in October 2025.

Film Making-Ofs

The Projects

BFW Wörgl
A second class from BFW Wörgl (Federal Vocational School for Economic Professions) submits a script for the project “Food on Film” addressing food waste. To prevent usable food from being thrown away, this class is fully committed to the cause.
The class receives food from MPreis that can no longer be sold and would otherwise end up in the trash. The students prepare a variety of delicious dishes from the usable food, which they then offer the next day during the break sale to all students at a very low price.
The proceeds go to a local charitable cause (a family in need), which the students/customers determine through a democratic vote.
In addition, they will film their project “Guats vu gestan.”

How Does Our Consumption Affect the Entire Food System?
As part of the EU project “Food on Film,” we have spent the past few weeks and months delving into the global challenges of the food system. In November, we visited the “Weltacker” in Innsbruck and saw just how much farmland our consumption actually takes up.
Over the last two months, we watched several interesting films on this topic – from exclusively local consumption to the horrific conditions of industrial animal farming – and then created our own scripts for 1-minute short films.
In groups, we focused on topics like industrial animal farming, packaging waste, and food waste, creating scripts and storyboards for these themes. The submission is coming up soon, and within our class, we have narrowly chosen one script to submit for the competition.
However, all the short films, once filmed, could be showcased at the Innsbruck Nature Film Festival. Our goal is to raise awareness of these everyday issues with our films. Every individual’s consumption already has a huge impact on the global food system. Everyone can make a change. We are excited to bring our scripts to life and prove ourselves at the festival!
