Built in 1904, the observatory was used for research by the University of Innsbruck until the 1970s, after which it was used for teaching students. Today, the well-preserved historical observatory in the north-east of the Botanical Gardens, together with its original instruments, is an important, largely unaltered monument to the history of Austrian science. As part of this guided tour, the observatory can be visited with Prof. Dr. Emmerich Kneringer - Experimental Particle Physics at the Institute for Astro- and Particle Physics at the University of Innsbruck.
